Next month, Rolando returns to the role of Alessandro in Mozart’s Il re pastore at the Opernhaus Zürich. The master Baroque conductor William Christie leads Rolando and a stellar cast in performances on May 5, 9, 12, and 17.
Written when Mozart was only 19, Il re pastore tells a tale of public duty and private love. Alessandro, King of Macedonia - sung by Rolando with “passion and charm,” according to the Wiener Zeitung - recognizes the true heir to the throne of Sidon in Aminta, a lowly shepherd. But when offered the throne, Aminta refuses for fear of losing his beloved Elisa. Stirred by Aminta's magnanimity, the king pronounces the couple joint rulers of Sidon.
